Addicted to… Chapstick?

Is it Possible to be Addicted to Chapstick?

There are numerous addictions out there; drugs, alcohol, food… but can you really be addicted to Chapstick? My opinion is YES but I don’t know if it’s actually been medically proven or anything. Who knows? The point of products like Chapstick, Carmex, etc.. (brands of lip balm) is to moisturize your lips. However, it seems that the more we use such products, the more we need them. Hmmm..? Is it the lip balm itself making our lips more and more dry? Or are we just addicted to it’s moisturizing goodness?

From personal experience, when I was on the rowing team in college, I could not go out on the water without some chapstick shoved in the leg of my spandex shorts. The thought of rowing in the wind, breathing heavy and not having chapstick to relieve my dry lips was just absurd. But hey, I wasn’t the only one! Many of us seemed to always have a tube handy, and if we forgot, you’d hear “Oh crap, does anyone have any chapstick?!?!”

StraightDope.com happens to have a post on this very subject:
