Oh, Henry!

Henry Rollins, who’s actual name is Henry Lawrence Garfield, has made quite the impression on me, I must say. I remember years ago hearing the line, “Life ain’t all that bad, even if Henry Rollins is your dad.” in an Ataris song called, “You Need a Hug” and thinking… “Why would that suck? That sounds AWESOME!” Ha ha, Henry Rollins is a cool motherf**ker, why would someone be sad if he was their father?? Hm.. oh well!

Anyway- if you haven’t already, you should visit www.HenryRollins.com (or http://21361.com) and check out his broadcasts under the Harmonies in my Head category.

He is most known from Black Flag and the Rollins Band, and also from his spoken word shows.

Back in the day.

A little more recent.

His first taste of the music industry when when he dropped out of college and became a roadie for Ian MacKaye’s band, Teen Idols.  When their singer didn’t show up for a show once, they let Henry sing and word of his talent spread quickly.  He became the frontman for a band called State of Alert, and his first album was released on Dischord Records. At this time, he was also managing an icecream store, which helped support State of Alert.

In 1980, Henry was introduced to the music of Black Flag and became a huge fan. He wasn’t aware that they were looking for a new vocalist while he was conversing with bass player, Chuck Dukowski. Their current singer, Dez Cadena, wanted to switch to guitar and they let Rollins (then Garfield) sing the song, “Clocked In” at a show in a New York bar. The band was impressed with his performace and after a semi-formal audition, the band announced him as their new lead singer. Henry Garfield became Henry Rollins after joining Black Flag.

Before Black Flag ever broke up, Rollins had begun a Spoken Word Tour. As things crumbled with Black Flag, he began a new project: Rollins Band. Today, he continues to tour and if you get a chance to see him, I recommend you take it! This man has been around the block a few times, and I can guess that he’ll continue to tour as long as he can.

HENRY ROLLINS RULES.

Okay, that is all.
