What the Hell is Taurine?

I’ve heard all sorts of rumors about what exactly taurine is (commonly used in energy drinks). By “rumors” I mean things like, hearing that is was made from bull sperm. This is NOT true… thankfully :)

Anywho- there is often negative stigma surrounding energy drinks, whether it’s those stupid Five Hour Energy commercials, talking about how much sugar is in them and whatnot (HELLOOOO they make sugar free ones! Dum dums). Any person that knows me for more than like, a day, knows that I am pretty much addicted to sugar free RockStars. As I say that I’m drinking a lo-carb/sugar free Monster.

Thanks to WiseGeek.com I got to learn just what taurine is what it can do for us, good and bad!

“Taurine is an amino sulfonic acid that is found in high levels in the skeletal and heart muscles of humans, as well as in white blood cells, and the central nervous system. It is also found in some plants, such as seaweed, fungi and bacteria. Taurine is a main ingredient in bile and aids in the digestion of fats and the absorption of vitamins that are fat soluble. It is a necessary acid that our body produces naturally.”

Well isn’t that interesting? :) Your brain will grow every day when you check out my awesome posts!! Ha ha.. anyway.. moving along..

“Taurine has many known benefits, although some have not been definitively proven. It may reduce high blood pressure in adults and is being tested as a potential treatment for bipolar depression. Studies on mice have shown that taking taurine supplements while on a high fat diet kept them from gaining weight. In other studies, diabetic rats saw improvement in losing weight, and lower blood sugar levels.

Taurine may counteract the effects of heavy drinking on the liver because it prevents fat from building up in the organ. Although this is not the intended or most responsible use of taurine, news of this have led many to believe that drinking an energy drink with high levels of taurine may be the perfect “morning after” treatment after a night of heavy drinking”

Now I’m not claiming that this website is 100% correct, because it’s obviously hard to trust anything on the internet now a days because just about anyone can post something!

Speaking of the bull semen rumor, WiseGeek.com also said this:

(a use posted this) They get the taurine from bull semen.
Editor’s reply: Actually, this is a myth. Taurine is not derived from bull semen, but a long time ago, was originally derived from the bile of oxen. Today, taurine used in food is synthetic.
I feel that anything our body produces naturally, can’t be all that bad for us, right? In my eyes, I don’t have many vices so the few that I do have are FINE! >: O haha, that is a mad, yelly face.

I have done a lot of research on the effects of Taurine myself and I’ve come to the same conclusion as you. The only websites I’ve found that makes claims to the negatives of Taurine are not credible and neither are their sources.

The thing I’m still not sure about however is Guarana. Most sites states its properties are identical to caffeine, but is not regulated by the FDA like caffeine is. Obviously too much is not a good thing… have you read anything about the long/short term side effects of Guarana found in most energy drinks?
