Voter Turnout

The last election had the highest voter turnout since 1968. The 2000 election taught us that every vote counts, considering it was such a tight race. This year is going to be NO exception. The polls are showing slight leads and still many undecided, but with the margin of error, it’s anyone’s race.

Year Eligible to Vote Total Vote % Eligible Voted
2004 201,541,000 122,265,430 60.7
2000 194,285,000 105,399,313 54.3
1996 187,033,000 96,277,634 51.5
1992 179,775,000 104,428,377 58.1
1988 172,540,000 91,594,805 53.1
1984 165,341,000 92,653,000 56.0
1980 158,143,000 86,497,000 54.7
1976 147,980,000 81,603,000 55.1
1972 137,318,000 77,625,000 56.6

Unfortunately, many people are voting for the wrong reasons, or they’re just misguided and think they know what they’re voting for, when truly, they are blind to what’s actually going on. I’ve said it many, many times… but people who expect government handouts are really sad. You should work for what you get, and not expect to be handed things that others have to work for. How is that fair? There are different circumstances, of course (i.e. special needs), but most are just lazy and don’t want to have to actually work. I know quite a few of those people myself.

While I want people to vote, I just think it’s sad that many people (that COULD have been voting for many past elections..) will be voting for the first time this year, and all for the wrong reasons. We should be supporting a candidate’s plans for this country, not just doing what MTV tells us to do, or following the herd of what’s “popular.” People can whine to me all they want about needing health insurance, wanting a tax break, etc.. well, Obama isn’t going to make that any better for you. By taxing the “Big CEO’s” as he’s stuck on doing, it’s only going to run more large businesses out of the country, which only gives another country that economic boost. And if you recall, the people heading the businesses are often in charge of the staff… which would be the everyday working class (like myself). If our business isn’t here, we don’t have a job! Duh. Or, if they are too taxed and can’t afford a lot of employees, jobs will be cut.

Why punish someone because they work hard? Need insurance? WORK FULL-TIME!! As an adult, it’s what you do! You go to work five days a week and support yourself. I’m sick of people living off mommy and daddy and whining about the government. Opportunity is something you make for yourself, it’s not the government’s responsibility.

But.. *sigh* I’ve said this crap over and over. I don’t see how people can still be undecided at this point. It’s so close to the election, and both candidates have reiterated their points, repeatedly.. the only difference, of course, is that McCain has stayed true to what he’s been saying, while Obama changes his outlook on things, depending on what area of the country he’s in, or sometimes he just changes his mind all together (goes by whatever he think will get more votes, aka, whatever the teleprompter says, instead of coming from his heart/own head, and doing what’s actually good for this country).  =) ha ha… aaaanyway… bottom line is VOTE! So many people bitch and complain about Bush, but did they even vote?? If you don’t vote, don’t say crap about it because you didn’t contribute anything or even do your part of a citizen of this country, so you don’t have room to complain about it.
