1Acting on Activism
Punknews.org recently reported that Fat Mike, Henry Rollins, Tom Morello, Justin Sane and Jello Biafra are going to be appearing in a new documentary that revolves around activism.
I know what you’re thinking… what the fuck is activism? Yeah, I know you don’t want to admit it, but I know people… haha.. so here ya go:
Activism: can be described as intentional action to bring about social, political, economic, or environmental controversial argument. change. This action is in support of, or opposition to, one side of an often
The word “activism” synonymously with protest or dissent, but activism can stem from any number of political orientations and take a wide range of forms from writing letters to newspapers or politicians, political campaigning, economic activism such as boycotts or preferentially patronizing businesses, rallies, street marches, strikes, both work stoppages and hunger strikes, or even guerrilla tactics.
In some cases, activism has nothing to do with protest or confrontation. For instance, some religious, or vegetarian/vegan activists try to persuade people to change their behavior directly, rather than persuade governments to change laws. The cooperative movement seeks to build new institutions which conform to cooperative principles, and generally does not lobby or protest politically.
(thank you, Wikipedia!)
Anywho- there’s not really a whole lot of info floating around about the film, but we do know that is was directed by Summer Preney and Jane Michener, written by Margaret Susan Martin and is entitled, Sounds Like a Revolution. There’s currently no word on whether or not it will be released to theaters.
IMBD says the film….
Documents the rise of a new government of activist musicians who are living proog that music is a powerful tool in the ongoing struggle for social change. From the Dixie Chicks to Michael Franti to the punk band Anti-Flag, artists across the musical spectrum recount their motivations and struggles over the last decade, in a post 9/11 world where dissent has been silenced and censorship in commonplace. No ordinary music doc, this inspiring rockumentary draws on the power of music and insights of artists to help us understand our world and find the courage to speak out about issues that concern us all.
Anyone that is remotely familiar with pretty much ANY of these bands (NOFX, Rage Against the Machine, Anti-Flag, etc..), you are aware that they are very political. I’m all about having an opinion on shit, and I understand that someone being in a well-known band has some influence over people.. so SOMETIMES I just think that kids “agree” with what these bands say because they are seeking somewhere to belong. I just think that before people get too into the “anthem songs” they can chant and scream to, maybe they should also attempt to look into ANYTHING they’re saying… *sigh* This will just never happen. Ha, unfortunately, in today’s society, politics have weaseled their way into mainstream “cool” and people are jumping on bandwagons just like sports, celebs, or anything else they can conform with.
In the end, do what you want. I don’t REALLY care and who really does..? Ha ha, everyone should like what they like and no justification is really needed. Just don’t like to chop people’s heads off or anything like that 🙂 Also, don’t get preachy on your shit either. Getting your “political IQ” from a band is NOT the way the way to go.. at all. However, if you want to get into THAT shit, you need to be listening to Leftover Crack and not Anti-Flag. Similar messages, except the boys of LOC are way more awesomeeeeeeee.
Okay that is all. Derrrrr.
