The Rose EP is a collection of songs that fans ask for when The Front Bottoms are on tour. Named after the drummer’s grandmother the Rose EP is an all-acoustic pop ride with thinking man’s lyrics. This is my first time with The Front Bottoms and I like it!
1. Flying Model Rockets
2. Lipstick Covered magnet
3. 12 Feet Deep
4. Jim Bogart
5. Be Nice To Me
6. Awkward Conversations
The Rose EP starts out with one of the best intros I’ve heard in awhile with Flying Model Rockets. The Driving drums, Piano, and acoustic guitar are a perfect combination together. “There’s nothing in California thought you can learn to hate here.” Lines like this stick with me. Lipstick covered magnet is the most poppy song of the 6 and makes me think about lost love and he or she moving on with their lives. “I’m scared I’m going to die as lonely as I feel right now.” This is my favorite lyric of this whole EP.
12 Feet Deep has feelings about knowing this is the wrong thing but remembering how fun it is. Maybe it’s a wake up call that things need to change for Brian Sella. Jim Bogart begins slow singing about life not working out and finishes up with a heartfelt chant exclaiming that maybe today we can do something we have never done before. Be nice to me is a very upbeat song with a great guitar riff throughout the song and Awkward Conversations ends the EP with an all acoustic ballad.
This is my first exposure to The Front bottoms and honestly it took me a few listens to really enjoy the EP. My first impressions of this EP were combinations of nerdy Weezer rock mixed with the lyrical writing of Matt Skiba and a little folky punky pop mix of Shotgun Jimmie. The Rose EP has elements of lost love, regret, self-doubt and pure honesty. This album is very hard to decipher exactly what Brian Sella is thinking about and that’s ok. This EP makes you think, and that is what I find the most appealing about the Rose EP.
