After about a decade of wild shows, incredibly creative physical album releases, and a discography of some of the most original punk rock to come out in quite some time, Private Function announced late last year that they would be calling in quits. But of course the band members had to have something up their sleeves for one last “hurrah” before they disbanded. That something is a 7-inch that contains their last two songs to ever be released.

The A-side track titled “Music Sucks (Fuck You)” is a classic, wild Private Function track. It’s full of crunchy guitars and lead vocalist Chris Penney’s throaty and aggressive-style singing, supported by massive “woahs” from the rest often band. It is a hugely anthemic tune with thundering drums and guitar bends that all together build so much tension that it all ultimately pays off between a screaming guitar solo and a sudden “start and stop” towards the end of the song. The band really went all out here. As you can tell by the title, the lyrics are a tongue-in-cheek shot at music overall and how it seems like everything has been done: “Everything’s been written/Everything’s been sung.”

On the flip side of this EP is “Taking The Edge Off,” which is a slower and more bass-heavy tune. Penney’s vocals are like a violent whisper that slowly morph into a more biting scream. The guitars are somehow even crunchier than they are on “Music Sucks (Fuck You)” and they especially shine towards the end of the song where they are complementing the death screams coming from the Penney and the rest of the back up vocalists.

It really is heartbreaking that Private Function decided to disband. For a long time, they were one of my favorite active punk acts and unfortunately I never got to see them perform live. The band had such a wonderful sense of humor and recorded some truly fantastic albums. It’s great that they at least had the ‘Music Sucks (Fuck You)’ 7-inch to release post-breakup as one last surprise for the fans. Both songs are classic Private Function and as expected, both songs absolutely rock.
