One of the best EP’s to come out in 2024 has a bit of a come back story. Australia’s own Stiff Richards hadn’t released any new material in nearly four years. But in mid-October the band came roaring back the released of a two-song 7-inch titled ‘GFC/Empty Barrels.’
The EP starts off with the volatile track “GFC.” The tune features a major build up right off the bat between jangly guitars and a swiftly and heavily beaten snare. The band really blasts off with choppy and swift chord changes and beats. Lead vocalist Wolfy Buckley goes no-holds-barred with the aggression and anger in his raspy yelling.
The B-side track, “Empty Barrels,” leans much more into classic hardcore sound. Buckley really ups the ante with his stellar screaming. The rest of the band is explosive, rocking back and forth between their turbulent guitar chords and drum beats and smoother ones. It’s a wonderfully chaotic song.
Once again, the ‘GFC/Empty Barrels’ 7-inch one of the more stand out releases of 2024. Both tracks unapologetically rip. Hopefully, we don’t have to wait another four years for more material from Stiff Richards.
