Review by Ricky Frankel

Germany’s brand new trio, The Snags, have dropped their very first release titled, ‘White Russians In Kreuzberg.’ The EP contains three in-your-face tracks that will get early melodic punk and pop-punk fans very stoked.

The band features guitarist Thomas Witty, formerly of the fantastic Natterers. If you are a fan of that project then you know that there will be some cleverly written tunes that contain some sick guitar work.

The title track really sets the tone of this release nicely with its jangly guitars and backing vocals that sort of this “teasing tone” to them. The lead vocals in this song (and through out the whole EP) are high pitched with a bit of a care-free tone to them. And of course, the British accent really adds character to it, along with all of the songs (at least to this American, it does).

“Crackin’ Up” continues a lot of the same aspects of “White Russians In Kreuzberg,” but the energy is turned up much higher and as speculated there is a terrific early rock n’ roll-inspired guitar solo that just shreds up through the middle of the track. “Crack And Glue” could easily be considered a party anthem. The snottiest of the three tracks, the droning backing vocals contrast very well with the lead singer’s high pitched vocals.

For a first release The Snags have really done well for themselves with ‘White Russians In Kreuzberg.’ It’s very clear from this release that they have established their sound. The real test for them will be where they take it next. Fans of bands like The Buzzcocks, The Spits, and even The Adicts will find ‘White Russians In Kreuzberg’ to be a refreshing take on a sound that has been beloved for decades.
