Just when you thought the Ska/Punk scene was dead and gone, Big D and the Kids Table drop 17 suspender, skinny tie and heal toe rocking jams on their newest release The Damned, The Dumb and The Delirious, put out by none other than Side One Dummy.
For a band that has been around since 95’ and boast more members than a traveling circus that includes “Doped up Dollies,†they still can brag about averaging over 200 shows a year, proving that Big D knows how to kick up the chocks and roll. As they prep for another year on the road which kicks off this summer with the Warped Tour of course, the Kids prove that maybe they deserve a seat at the grownups table. Whether or not you like them is irrelevant, as heavy hitters such as Joe Sib and Kevin Lyman of Side One Dummy and Warped Tour respectively, both think of Big D and the Kids Table as one of the hardest working band still having fun in 2011. I tend to agree with them.

I know what you’re thinking; skunk music is still being made? The answer is yes, and it does not matter what the music world is doing, the sound has not changed. Plenty of upbeat tempo with just enough brass to keep the songs together.
Big D and the Kids table does well to stay within the guidelines without moving to far north or south of center in their latest offering “The Damned, The Dumb and The Deliriousâ€. Though the songs may range in message from your good timey drunk at a bar sing along like “Best of them all†to the politically tinged “It’s Raining Zombies on Wall Streetâ€, the sound never ventures far from the formulaic recipe heard throughout this genres history. The one song that does try to break the mold in a doo wop fashion is “Stringersâ€, which proves that the band definitely has imagination and should not be afraid to use it more often.
All in all it is a catchy toe tapping album. Don’t look to it if you’re looking for ground breaking tunes. The album runs a tad long, I would suggest to the fellas to not be scared of abandoning some of these songs to a B side album. It would have kept the attention span of this guy a bit longer which is not a bad thing.
If you like the band already, then The Damned will not make you stop, if you are trying to get into a new band, may I suggest starting elsewhere. I for one will be inviting people over for barbeques this summer and you can bet your bottom dollar that this album will be spinning in the background as that is exactly the type of music for the situation.
