The boys of Boozed took baby steps on their road to becoming a legitimate rock n’ roll band. They started off in their mid teens as an AC/DC cover band, playing in their hometown of Bramsche, Germany. While I’m sure this was a crowd pleaser and probably kept the unterhosen flying in their direction, the band began to develop as voluptuously as their tween groupies. They increasingly wrote more and more of their own songs, grew as musicians and solidified a sound that is quintessentially rock n’ roll.
One Mile, the latest album from Boozed features your standard rock n’ roll sound with a few songs that flirt with the idea of going punk, but never quite get there. Some of the songs are so formulaic in their execution of Americana style rock that you feel an odd sense of having heard the song before. But it’s only blending with the hundreds of radio-friendly rock songs spewing from the jukeboxes of every college bar in America. While One Mile has its share of duds, I found several winners as well, where you can hear some genuine energy and passion behind the music. A couple of my favorites are Trouble and the bonus track Sexy, where Markus sings in his native tongue.
Overall the album delivered by Boozed is high quality in a technical sense and does justice to its particular niche, but I think that even die-hard rock n’ roll fans will most likely tire of the lack of complexity and predictability of most of the songs that Boozed has delivered.
