Hailing from Calgary, Fall City Fall is a five piece hardcore band whose sole purpose is to change the music scene forever through the power of lyrics and sound. In 2012, Victory records chose them from a sea of bands to continue on their journey and unleash their fire, starting with their new album, Victus.

St. James starts out as a welcoming introduction song that is automatically ear-grabbing. Starting off a bit slow, when the vocals chime in, you can hear how passionate they are and that he’s fighting for you to understand him and hear him out.
The next song, Dissentipede, flows right from the last with no pauses. This song starts out the same pace as the last one had ended, but picks up rapidly as organized chaos appears midway through the song. If you like hectic hardcore with lyrics where you can envision a story, then this song should be at the top of your playlist.
Anxiety Attack is the third track and starts out with an infectious guitar riff and beats blasted in your ears. This song is super catchy and the vocals flow well with it. The song title fits perfectly with how fast the song is. Though, It’s a shame how short this is but I guess it’s better left short and sweet, than long and overdone!
Bitter To The End is another chaotic song that’s in your face yelling, “I’m not afraid, I’m not afraid” repetitively. The lyrics are said in a way that makes his spoken word catchy – on their own. It’s an added bonus that the guitar melodies and drumming is catchy as well.
Lovebirds is a song full of passion and quotable phrases. My favorite lyric from this song being, “To swallow your speech is to poison the words in the verses that are sung” and “choke on your words, I will sit here and starve.” This is another song in which the spoken word is also catchy on it’s own. This is easily my favorite track from the album.
Many Masters brings you a catchy guitar riff but soon turns into vocals being thrown in your face (enjoyably, of course). While reading the lyrics along with it, this song took me in a trance. “I’ve been bruised and broken bodied but to the broken hearted that means nothing at all.” “I’m not afraid of my own inner demons, they kept me company when no one else would.” This song is intelligent, deep, well done and relatable. The lyrics are said and the music is played in a way that you can almost feel what he’s feeling. That’s true talent. This song is another one of my favorites on this album.
Many Lives begins with an entrancing beat and melody. It’s a bit more calming than the rest of the songs but as the it goes on, it builds up and then goes back into the beginning melody. Even though this song is calming and not the craziest on the album, it helped break up the nonstop, yet enjoyable, chaos. The end starts to pick up faster and then you’re brought into Shallow Believer.
Shallow Believer doesn’t let you wait long before they pick you back up and get you amped. “Dead saints, shallow believers, all the fakes, the best deceivers” is repeated in the song, but not enough for you to grow tired of it. The gang vocals make this song anthem-like and the lyrics go deep. ”No compassion for the monsters we’ve become.”
Dead Saints is in your face and the lyrics are geared towards someone who had done him wrong. At the end of the song, he says, “and if you are to die before you wake, say hello to my father for me because its hell you will face.” Not only is there emotion behind this song, but the structure of the lyrics shows true writing talent.
Taken is a slower song and the longest on the album. It continues to stay slow as he preaches his lyrics to our ears. “Everything is wrong, everything is lost, we’re all fucked” is said multiple times and every time he repeats it, there is more passion behind it than the last. The lower vocals underlying the normal vocals, sets the tone and mood for the song.
Last but not least, Victus, the title track, is probably one of three personal favorites off of the album. Not only because it’s incredibly pleasing on the ears, but the lyrics are uplifting and powerful. “Life deals us shitty hands that’s for certain, it’s how you deal that defines the person” Between the instrumentation, the way it is sung and how it’s relatable, makes it powerful. The song fades out and you are left to take it all in for a moment.
This album is hands down one of the most passion driven, powerful albums I’ve listened to in a while. The lyrics aren’t some fake bullshit about partying and having fun, they’re about demons, life experiences and his true emotions without holding back. The way they are spoken shows true passion and the instrumentation follows the same suite and helps set the tone. This band works well together and very natural. I think everyone should listen to this album at least once through.
If you’re sick of generic bands and need a kick of passionate, conviction driven music in your life, then I highly suggest you give Victus a listen.
