While they are actively seeking a new vocalist, the current members of The Fortune Teller are:

Robert Platz – drums

Julian Rodriguez – guitar

Sean Hall – guitar

Alec Stanczyk – bass

Their debut EP, Beyond The Mirage, was released August 1st, and for especially playing together for less than a year, this shit is pretty damn good!

1: Overture

2: Beyond The Mirage

3: The Ventriloquist

4: Lines In The Sand

5: The Visual Device

The Fortune Teller is band from the Los Angeles area, with a goal to show a more musical and intellectual side of metal. With influences ranging from current metal and heavy bands to indie and classical music. The Fortune Teller incorporates a high level of music theory and knowledge into every song they play. There is so much boring and generic music today, The Fortune Teller aims to end any misconception that heavy music does not take talent or that there are only a handful of true musicians in metal. Many surprises are ahead… stay tuned.”

On the EP, the vocalist has a decent scream, but his harmonies are mediocre. I’m not sure whether to credit that to his actual voice or maybe the recording- but either way, the talent of the musicians definitely outshine the vocals. Julian and Sean can totally shred, which is severely underrated (in my opinion), considering there are many successful bands that can’t play guitar half as well as a lot of the unsigned bands I’ve heard.

I can’t say the originality is totally there- but these boys can play. They are talented enough to be successful, that’s for sure, and they definitely deserve a listen. Their 5 track EP is available now, and you can give them a listen on their MySpace.

Some of the breakdowns and riffs are definitely reminiscent of Protest the Hero and The Bled. The vocalists screams often remind me of James Muñoz (of The Bled), but the instrument work definitely reminds me of bands like PTH.

If I had one suggestion, it would be: More cowbell! =)

*****If you’re a vocalist and you you’re interested in trying out for The Fortune Teller, be sure to visit their MySpace page and let them know!*****
