The Hip Priests are a denim wearing, ass kicking, Detroit sounding, Rock n Rollin, garage rocking, in your face band. No they are not from Detroit but they sound like it. Yes they do wear denim but I only know that after looking at pictures of them and yes they are so rock n roll that I needed to stop listening halfway through my first listen to clear my mind. Just from listening to this album I can imagine their live shows getting very crazy. This album captures that live feeling they are probably famous for and I like it. The guitar solos rip, the vocals are balls out, the bass just sits back and plays what it should and the drums are just plain kick ass.
Their website describes them as, the inbred, oversexed, white trash bastard sons of Iggy P, Johnny T, Lemmy & Handsome Dick. I don’t think you can get more perfect than that. I think they sound like Sounds like MC5, Nashville Pussy, Turbonegro, Electric Frankenstein and the Dead boys.
My only complaint is some of the lyrics. I think some of the lyrics are just way to cliché. I like cliché but you can over do it sometimes. Another complaint is no songs really stand out to me, they all kind of run together. The only song on the album that stands out to me is Treat me like Dirt. But that’s only because I do not like this song at all. The woman vocalist and Von Cruz’s voice do not mix well for me.
To sum this album up it’s a total rock n roll album. It’s hard to listen all the way through because it is so damn garage punk rock n roll that you can overdose on it. A collect your thoughts type moment is in order in the middle of this album. I would recommend this album to people but I would also LOVE to see them live because I know I would have different thoughts on this album. Pretty sure they kill it live.
