1Hundredth “Revolt” Album Review
Hundredth
Revolt
Review by Jacob Ray
South Carolina’s Hundredth just released Revolt, the first half of a double E.P. entitled Revolt/ Resist on Mediaskare Records. No Sleep Records have the vinyl nerds covered and you can buy Revolt in your format of choosing right now (Resist should be released later this year). Anyways, the band is playing a couple of dates in the Northeast part of the U.S. before hopping across the pond with Stick To Your Guns for a European tour.

I saw Hundredth a while ago at the Blast-O-Mat (RIP) in Denver. My friend’s band (The Burial Plot) were on the bill so I went to see my buddy play bass. I remember liking Hundredth (they headlined) but for whatever reason, I didn’t really listen to their album after that. If their first album is anything like the Revolt EP, then I have made a terrible mistake.
First of all, Revolt was recorded at the Blasting Room in Fort Collins and Bill Stevenson and Jason Livermore don’t LET bands make shitty records, so I knew it was going to be good simply based off of that. Of course, because of the production team, the record sounds f-in fantastic. Revolt starts off with “Ruin” which is about how we humans are fucking up the planet and we need to do something about it, which is pretty much inarguable at this point. This song, and indeed the rest of the EP, is furious melodic- hardcore similar to Stick to Your Guns and the Ghost Inside, and that’s not to say that Hundredth has doesn’t have their own unique sound. The second song “Savages” is tied with the last song for my favorite song on the EP. The lyric “Spirits of the wicked, you stack bills, they stack bodies” is pretty awesome and the whole song is an attack on the corporate fat cats that run pretty much everything.
A song about not being a dumb-ass and opening your mind is always a welcome thing in the “angry” music genre, and “Free Mind/ Open Spirit” is just that. Chadwick Johnson (the vocalist) tells us we need to open our minds and “tear down the justice system”. While this may seem a bit extreme at first, turn on the news and you will find that the justice system needs a good tearing down. “Barren,” the slowest song on Revolt returns to environmental topics, tells us that if we keep denying that the Earth is falling apart, then we will be left with a home that is completely barren. Hundredth does not provide a lot of feel- good optimism, but they do provide us with some hard truths.
Revolt closes with “Euclid (Slave Song), my other favorite song on this EP. The neat thing about this song is the inclusion of lyrics from an old song that African- American slaves used to sing (“Swing low, swing chariot, comin’ forth to carry me home”, you know it). While they don’t cover the song word for word (probably a good thing), it is cool that they make the connection from the past to the present, especially being from South Carolina. Unfortunately, lyrics like the ones on Revolt are written specifically for those of us who live in the United States in 2013. The old adage still applies, “If you aren’t angry, you aren’t paying attention.” In this reviewers’ opinion Revolt is damn good. I will definitely be buying this and I will not sleep on any of Hundredth’s past or future releases and neither should you.
