PWV: How long have did it take you to film/gather footage?
About 3 years has been spent on the film, with 2 of those focusing mostly on filming and gathering footage.
PWV: How did you go about finding your crew? How much fan footage did you use?
We (the four main filmmakers) have all been friends since adolescence. We all work in the film and video industry now. We’ve had a good amount of archival stuff sent in by fans. Descendents and ALL fans are fanatics and keep everything (old show flyers, ticket stubs, newsletters etc). They rule!
PWV: Was there ever a moment you thought you wouldn’t complete the project?
I don’t think we ever thought we wouldn’t finish the film, but there were times when we probably questioned if we’d reach the bar we set for ourselves.
PWV: Do you remember the first time you heard the Descendents?
Lacour: I got into punk rock in the early 90’s. Not exactly the golden age of punk or the Descendents but to quote Chris Shary “You can’t choose when you are born”. So as a “skater” teen in the 90’s I got on board as soon as I could. I was part of a small music scene and we all played in bands and loved the Descendents and ALL. My bandmates and I all gravitated to the melodic stuff but we also liked it fast and hard, so naturally the Descendents and ALL were at the top of our lists. We became diehards and embraced the Descendents/ALL mentality and philosophy. Questing ALL! Going for ALL! In ALL things.
PWV: Can you justify someone claiming to like the Descendents but not ALL?
We completely understand how people can feel that way. All four of us love ALL, but that’s up for each person to decide on their own.
Of all the musicians interviewed for the film, which was the most entertaining?
Rayburn: One great interview experience for me was Dave Grohl. Listening to a guy who has influenced music so much discuss how Bill Stevenson was a drumming idol for him, that was cool. And he was incredible gracious. As it turned out for us, the bigger the “rock star” we interviewed, the cooler and kinder they were.
PWV: I know this is a tough one but tell me what you’d consider your favorite Descendents song.
