These two bands from Texas, Samuel Caldwells Revenge from Denton and Perdition from Fort Worth, threw this split down mid 2011. It’s an interesting four songs that provide some cool entertainment with great lyrics if only for a short while. During a four song shared lp, it’s a bit hard to measure a band and give an opinion that might sway others checking it out or moving along to any future offerings from other ensembles, but, here goes…
Perdition’s “I Saved A Bullet For You” begins with a great punky riff and a sweet vocal break. Just as I was cruzin’ along and enjoying myself, it fell into a more reggae-ish break that was immediately not too pleasing yet quite unexpected and different; THAT, I like.
“I’ll Be Careful, You’ll Be Dead” is also very catchy and fun and has a great message. A straight-forward, uplifting and ‘go get’em kid’ kind of inspiring thing. There just isn’t a whole lot to try to explain it’s simply a great tune. Take a listen and read the lyrics, you will feel better. These guys know how to create catchy tunes, cool lyrics with right-on-time breaks.
Samuel Caldwells Revenge’s 2 contributions to this split are quite different from their Perdition partners. Upon first listen, I thought I was hearing a Samiam/Iron Maiden combo. “Inside Every Cynic Is A Disappointed Idealist” has a great start, a killer catchy riff and soon after a change that rides smooth to yet another switch. The guitar is… yeah, Iron Maideny, and the vocals remind me of Jason Beebout but these are good things.
“Roothogs” is much more difficult to follow. It’s starts out simple enough, but fast. It changes mid-song and, I’ll admit, kinda lost me… jumping high and low and then, even faster. After I got back and track, I found it to be as good as each other tune put down on this comp.
On another note, Samuel Caldwells Revenge has quite a weak web existence. I was surprised to see that there was little to no mention of another 4 song split they did with the band In Bad Taste AND their full length 11 track lp “The Power to Consume Ourselves” These were not mentioned much of anywhere except Amazon.
We all use facebook, myspace, wiki, punkworldviews, anything and whatever, to find out info, tours, history, look at footage, etc. to familiarize ourselves with existing bands but also to find new material. Perhaps I need training on this inner-web thing but I expected to find much more press and if it were my band, there would be a much bigger presence. At any rate, I’ll be looking for more releases from both these bands hopefully in the near future
