Sometimes I feel like my music collection needs something to revamp a genre that I put on the back burner (unintentionally) and the S/T release from Pentimento is just what I needed. These guys have the sound of my favorite pop punk records that take me back to those high school days, but they add their own twist to it that makes it refreshing and reinvented.
“Unless” has all of your favorite components from the collection of the early 2000’s pop punk records; It has those short isolations of the guitars and bass, gang vocals, and that “clapping kick drum” part you know will go off during the live set. With lyrics like “just to say that hope is something that’s been built to hold you back” you’ll be chanting with your arms raised in the air in no time.
The first half of the album meshes well together. All the tracks compliment each other very well and have a seamless flow that is one great song after another. Jeramiah has a hint of rasp that sounds great and the backing vocals on “The Wind” really stand out making it a song you want to hear over and over again. The track listing is perfect because the deeper you get track wise the more Pentimento pulls you in.
Once “Days Away” starts you get a different feel for what Pentimento brings to the table. They slow it down a bit, but the intensity is still there. After the rapid fire of songs at the beginning this S/T shows that they aren’t a one trick pony, and even though it slows down and feels like they’re losing you a bit after listening to the album a second time through it all comes together to be an album that you can’t stop listening to. Pentimento’s S/T is definitely worth your while, and how could you go wrong when they are giving away the goods for free; but don’t be a cheap ass and give these dudes what they deserve: some gas money to come play a show near you.
