GWAR is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year — at least as far as modern humans are concerned, considering the band was frozen in Antarctica until holes in the ozone caused by massive hairspray use in the ’80s thawed the band of alien warlords from its prehistoric slumber. As such, this year’s GWAR-B-Q, held once again at Hadad’s Lake in Richmond, Va., was bigger and better than ever, with 21 bands performing across three stages. Though I-95 congestion held us up, we still made it in time to catch Ringworm, Cancer Bats, Ghoul, Goatwhore, Cro-Mags, Down, Clutch, GWAR, and this year’s co-headliners, Descendents, blasting through sets that saw bodies, blood, and even donuts flying through the air.
