Southern California has always been a key area for churning out successful punk bands. Â Melodic, fast, punk with a wee bit of metal mixed in is probably one of my favorite genres of music (think Strung Out, Good Riddance, etc..). Â Pour Habit is a band that I think is often overlooked, but they’re here with a new album and it’s not one to miss!
Got Your Back is the band’s third full length release. Â It’s available on Fat Wreck Chords, and I don’t know about you all, but I am a Fat Wreck JUNKIE. Â So many of my favorite bands are on Fat and I just am hardly disappointed with any of their stuff.
1. Dead Soldier’s Bay
2. Heads of State
3. Greenery
4. Matter of Opinion
5. East 69th
6. Head in the Clouds (Danny’s Song)
7. Party
8. Teens Turned to Fiends
9. Tomahawk
10. For All Who Have Given and Lost
11. Gutterblock Boy
12. The Expert
13. Conscience Mind of Revelation
To be honest, I’ve seen Pour Habit live before, but I’ve never been someone to listen to their albums. Â Nothing against them, I just never caught on I guess. Â However, being sent Got Your Back for review had me changing my perspective on them for sure. Â After sort of pigeonholing them as a typical SoCal punk band, I now appreciate them a lot more. Â This album has such a wide range of music styles on this album, you can’t help but give them some credit for that alone.
This album starts off strong with the fast paced track, Dead Soldier’s Bay. Something I’ve noticed on this album that is very apparent in this song is the drums on this album fucking RULE. Â Good job, Colin.
They start to mix it up a bit with Head in the Clouds, which is a little slower paced than the five previous tracks. Â However, things get really mellow with the next track, Party, which is more like a reggae anthem about… well.. what do you think? PARTYING. Pour Habit loves to make local referenced in their tracks, which is a quality I LOVE in a band. Â It shows hometown pride and really makes it cool for listeners that have been there or are from there also.
There are a few tracks I’m not in love with, but as a whole, this is a pretty rad album. Â It’s available now so GO GET IT, A-HOLE.
