Today Fearless Records released the third edition of Punk Goes Pop; a compilation of metal-core, pop-punk bands covering chart topping pop songs such as Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Justin Timberlake and more.

Previous Punk Goes Pop albums have sold over 600,000 copies and two million singles. Â It’s only one of the many series that Fearless has released, among Punk Goes Crunk, Punk Goes Classic Rock and Punk Goes Acoustic.

I think this is definitely a good idea and I can see how they can continue to release volumes. Â I mean… there are constantly new chart topping hits from pop artists and it’s always intriguing to hear them played by a different genre. Â My biggest negative toward the series is I don’t consider any of these bands “punk” really… I mean… I definitely consider them more screamo, metal core, pop-punk… etc. Â I don’t even know what to call Family Force 5… Christian pop-rock?

Family Force 5

As for the tracks I love and the tracks I loathe… my favorite is definitely track 9, which is Rise Records‘ band, Of Mice & Men covering Blame It by Jamie Foxx. Â They actually put their own sound on the track instead of trying to make it sound like the original. Â This is also the first released recording by them with their new vocalist, Jerry Roush. Â I was pleasantly surprised with how good Roush sounded on the track. Â Of screamers in the genre, he seems to be one of the more “understandable” ones, which is a nice break from the typical screeching growls from many scene bands.

Miss May I covered Run This Town by Jay Z, and it’s another favorite of mine from the bunch. Â Woe, Is Me’s cover of Hot N Cold by Katy Perry is probably the most unique cover of them all. Â From the second that track started, I knew it was Woe, Is Me, which is a great quality to have when doing a cover. Â You should respect the original song but definitely add your own sound to it. Â I don’t see the point in trying to make a cover sound exactly like the original… I mean.. it’s not karaoke. (Otherwise, we’d hear Journey, right?)

Miss May I

I am NOT a fan of the first track, Breathe Carolina‘s cover of Down by Jay Sean. Just seems kind of bland to me, but it could also be because I’m not a huge fan of that band to begin with. Â The Lady Gaga cover by Artist Vs. Poet isn’t a top choice either, simply because they didn’t really make it their own.

All in all, the album is definitely interesting. Â If you’re a fan of Fearless Records’ type of bands, I’d definitely check them out. Â Getting to hear them in a new light is cool and you get to hear some different sounding vocals from most of the bands, so it’s worth checking out. Â It’s available today so get off the computer and go get one!!
