Screeching Weasel
After a decade without new material, punk icons Screeching Weasel just released a new album on Fat Wreck Chords called First World Manifesto.
1. Follow Your Leaders
2. Frankengirl
3. Beginningless Vacation
4. Dry Is The Desert
5. Totem Pole
6. Creepy Crawl
7. Three Lonely Days
8. Friday Night Nation
9. All Over Town
10. Fortune Cookie
11. Baby Talk
12. Come And See The Violence Inherent In The System
13. Bite Marks
14. Little Big Man
Despite the ten year gap between their last release, First World Manifesto sounds like it could have easily been some of their earlier work. Â Album after album, these dudes have given us some damn good pop-punk, and they didn’t fuck it up with this one. Â Sure, they haven’t developed or anything, but I don’t necessarily see it as a bad thing. Â They’re good at it, they know it, and they’re sticking to it. Â Some bands try too hard to make new albums sound different from the previous ones and that normally only has one outcome: SUCKNESS. Just write your damn music, if they like it, great, if not, then oh well. Â I have to respect The Weez for staying true to their roots.
I love how the album starts out. Â From the first five seconds of Follow Your Leaders, you’re like “YESSSSS. This rules.” The album never wanes from their original sound. Â Songs like Dry is the Desert are a little slower, but still rad. Â Little Big Man sounds like a classic SW jam, and a great end to a great album.
It’s unfortunate that soon after this release, some drama went down at SXSW with the band and a fan. Â Rumor has is that they are no more. Boo. However, we can’t too upset because they did give us quite a run, and every band must come to an end eventually. Â I’m pretty sure only GG Allin could get away with punching chicks. Â God I miss him.
