The Von Ehrics are back with their fourth full length studio offering “Two Foot Stomp” and they do not disappoint. The Texas quartet is a self proclaimed punkabilly act who takes what they play seriously enough to make it a lifestyle. Lucky Buck Productions is the label “lucky” enough to release this diamond in the rough.
Does anybody remember The Vandals “Slippery When Ill”? Well picture that, only serious and you have The Von Ehrics and no joke, it is really good. The whole rock and roll infused punk country scene is coming to a head and to be quite honest with you, I wasn’t sure about it. Bands like The Von Ehrics have drastically changed my mind and given me an opinion. I like the hell out of this rootn’ tootn’ stuff.

I can be the sarcastic asshole that you think I am. But I actually am not being that guy right now. I really think what The Von Ehrics have in “Two Foot Stomp” is truly creative and original. They have crafted a sound out of 3 very different genres to form this punkabilly sound that neither sounds forced or fake. In fact after doing my research on the band (yes I actually read up on the subject I am reviewing) I was very upset to find that I had just missed them at my neighborhood watering hole down here in San Diego. I thought “had I only received the review one day earlier” I would have definitely been able to give a live review as well.
“Two Foot Stomp” starts like any good album does, strong, fast and in your face with “Last of the Working Slobs.” A song about a Vietnam Vet turned father trying to support his family even when they don’t reciprocate. A very cliché subject for country music I’m sure. The stripped down guitar and very fast upbeat drumming lends itself perfectly to the backdrop of all 12 stories told throughout the album.
The Von Ehrics seamlessly take their muse from that very punkabilly sound they’ve helped create to slower ballad type song like “Gone” which employs a very slick steel guitar sound, to the use of a gospel choir in “Lord I Pray”. The album may take its cues from many other types of music, but I guarantee that it will be many other bands that start modeling themselves after The Von Ehrics.
Pick up “Two Foot Stomp” today; it is something that will not disappoint, no matter your personal preference.
Don’t be a fool and miss these guys when they come to your town be sure to catch The Von Ehrics while they pound pavement! Check the dates.
