0TIME AGAIN (interview w/Oren!)
Time Again
A punk rock band from Los Angeles. The band was formed in the summer of 2004 by vocalist Daniel Dart and guitarist Elijah Reyes. Before they even had a full band or a single song written, they began printing stickers and fliers for Time Again to heavily promote their band, resulting in numerous shows being booked. Time Again only came together as a full band a few days before their first show, with Brian Burnham and Ryan Purucker joining on bass guitar and drums. The band says some of their musical influences are Rancid, Operation Ivy, and The Clash. In June 2005, Time Again released a self-titled EP on Tim Armstrong and Lars Frederiksen of Rancid’s Hellcat Records. This EP would result in heavy radio play on several Los Angeles radio stations, including Fungus 53 XM, which would name the EP as one of the top 25 albums of 2005, and the song “I Go Back” as one of the top 10 songs of 2005. It included a cover of Rancid’s song “Tattoo”. The band released their debut full-length, The Stories are True, on April 25, 2006, on Hellcat Records. The band released their new album Darker Days in early 2008.

Recently, I had a chance to interview Oren, and, as usual, ask a few questions my mind was pondering! Enjoy!
1.) Tell me how you feel about your bands success; Are you content with where you are, or do you still feel you’re striving for more?
I’m very happy with my bands success, but I’m always striving for more. I love what I do, but I’m always curious to see what more can happen next.
2.) Can you elaborate the album title, Darker Days? Are you referring to society now, or another time, etc..?
There’s a funny story about the album title “Darker Days.” We had the album written and ready to go, but no one could agree on an album title. Everybody wanted to name it something else. When we started doing demos for the album, we just picked a random song title so the album can have a name for the meantime, which happened to be “Darker Days,” we were running out of time to come up with an album name, so we all just agreed to keep it.
3.) What is your favorite area to tour? (i.e. certain cities, East Coast vs. West Coast)
It’s hard for me to pick my favorite area to tour. It’s kind of like asking a parent who their favorite kid is! Haha. Each city we’ve been to has its own life time full of memories and because of that, we look forward to each city we pass through.
4.) So what do you think about our PC world? Do you feel people are offended too easily or people need to be more careful of what they say?
Some people do get offended too easily and because of that, we do have to be careful with what we say, which is unfortunate. Personally, none of that stuff bothers me, I don’t care what people say. For example, if you did something cheap, I’m sure you know at least one person that would call you a Jew because of that. I am Jewish and that doesn’t bother me in the least bit, but Ii know people that it would bother. There are more important things to worry about then being called “gay” for doing something stupid or being called Jew for doing something cheap.
5.) Give me your opinion on bands like Good Charlotte, Simple Plan, etc..
That question depends on your definition of “punk.” To me “punk” isn’t just about the music you listen to and the clothes you wear, it’s a lot more than that. Bands like Good Charlotte or Simple Plan don’t act like they’re “punk,” they dress how they want to, play the music they want to and believe what they want to. It’s the listeners and the audience that label them.
(i.e.) *Denise: Most people that know me know that I loathe Good Charlotte.. haha.. so I will let him pass on this answer and still like them… 🙂
6.) If you could only listen to three albums for the rest of your life, what would they be?
That’s a really hard question to answer, I’ve been sitting here for 10 minutes trying to decide.. haha, ok I’m gonna say..
1. Green Day – Dookie
2. Living End – Self Titled
3. Red Hot Chili Peppers – By The Way
As I typed those, I thought of about a million other records I’d be missing out on. That’s like asking a parent who their favorite kid is, too!
7.) Were all of you in a lot of previous bands before T.A.? If so, were they of similar sound or is this band a new musical direction for any of you?
Ya’ we all played in several different bands before Time Again and they were all punk bands. I guess it’s just the music we always loved and always wanted to play.
8.) I read that most of your new album was written on the road. Is it more difficult to write music during your have time off or when you’re on touring?
Writing music on the road always came more naturally to us and that’s because so much of our life is lived on tour. We also spend hours on end in the van and a guitar always happens to make it way out of its case and that’s where most of our music comes from.
9.) Explain what you feel when you see someone with a Time Again tattoo?
I play music hoping to make a difference in peoples lives, make people feel the way I do when I listen to certain music. When I see someone with a Time Again tattoo, I feel as if I did just that. It’s an honor and the most rewarding feeling you can imagine.
10.) Do you think this country is headed for a better change, or do you think we’ll continue to slip in so many areas?
It has to be headed for a better change, it might get worse before it gets better, but it cant stay like this forever. For now, we just have to keep our heads up and hope for the best.
