3Flag is the new Black Flag (what the shit?)

If you’re into the punk scene at all, I’m sure you’ve seen all your cool friends bitching via their social networks about this “Black Flag reunion” shit.
Back in December 2011, I was lucky enough to be in the photo pit of Goldenvoice’s 30th Anniversary show (also known as GV30) in Santa Monica. It was there that Black Flag played their first show since…. the 80’s I think? Check out my photos and some video from that one. The weird thing about that is Black Flag founding member Greg Ginn was NOT on the stage for that performance, however he is the one behind this endeavor.

While Ginn is forming Black Flag reunion shows, another re-formed band will go by Flag and will also have former Black Flag members Keith Morris, Chuck Dukowski and Bill Stevenson and Stephen Egerton. If you’re curious, I actually caught up with original Black Flag bassist Chuck Dukowski last August and interviewed him with his new project, The Chuck Dukowski Sextet. With Ginn’s Black Flag lineup, previous vocalist Ron Reyes will perform along with Gregory Moore on drums. It is not determined (or at least not to the public) as to who will play bass for this lineup yet.
Black Flag
May 18 – Ruhrpott Rodeo – Germany
August 4 at Hevy Fest – U.K.
August 31 – Muddy Roots Music Festival – Tennessee
Flag
May 24-27 – Punk Rock Bowling Festival -Las Vegas, NV
Ginn was the only consistent member of Black Flag, but Keith Morris is one of the most iconic vocalists (also the original) next to Henry Rollins (whom of which will NOT be involved in Flag). Stay tuned for more news on this… I’m not sure how I feel about it to be honest. Why are they changing the name but keeping it so close to the original? Are they just going to play Black Flag songs? WHY GOD WHY? Can’t they just reconcile and play as ONE? Black Flag is such an important piece of punk rock history…. I’m just scared they’re going to tarnish their reputation with whatever is about to happen. I guess we will find out. It looks like the two bands will be going head-to-head…. I am personally pissed about both things for some reason. Eff it all. THEY’RE GOING TO RUIN EVERYTHING.
